What is Coaching?
Coaching has been defined by the ICF (International Federation of Coaching) as ‘partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential’.
It is a safe space for exploration of situations or issues where both parties in the coaching conversation are involved and invested in the success of the session.
My role in the coaching/client conversation to support you on your journey of increasing awareness and self-reflection. I am here to enable that safe, non-judgmental space for exploration and growth.
To that end, I am not here to offer advice or fix issues. As a coach I help clients to find their own answers; coaching concentrates on sharing and revealing insights and the opening up new possibilities.
Coaching is different to counselling – Carol Kauffman, PhD (a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, where she is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute of Coaching) with her understanding of both therapy and coaching has helpfully explained that “In therapy you follow the trail of tears, to find where people need healing. In coaching, you follow the trail of dreams……….Coaching is helping people to see what they do not know that they know.”

I feel very strongly about starting discussions around emotions that we sometimes find tough or taboo, such as shame, empathy, self-compassion, and trust.
My mission extends to developing emotional literacy in children as well as adults.
Being hugely influenced by the works of subject matter experts such as Dr Brené Brown, Martin Seligman, James Hollis, Daniel Goleman, Harriet Lerner, and Dr Kristen Neff, I refer frequently to these researchers and influencers of emotional literacy and other areas of psychological well-being.
I therefore design and deliver training and workshops; speak at a variety of forums, from corporate events to sessions in schools, and facilitate events around some of the tougher emotions to process. These sessions are interactive and allow time for individual reflection as well as group discussion.
I had the opportunity to work with Sarah during an inaugural course using outdoor activities in the Brecon Beacons as a vehicle to teach and coach positive psychology. This course aim was to stretch adolescents beyond their comfort zone, building resilience, self-confidence and positivity through character development, and Sarah was a pivotal team member in both design and execution.
It was Sarah’s task to make sure the course design was underpinned by positive psychology theory, and that the delivery itself was always consistent and contextually relevant to that thread. As a positive psychology and self-esteem expert Sarah leveraged her own knowledge to create and deliver accessible course content, whilst liaising with key speakers and other content delivers to produce a coherent curated course.
The material that Sarah delivered covered mindset, intention setting, and mindfulness, complemented by several useful techniques that supported the participants’ mental well-being, such as breath work, meditation and visualisation.
Sarah engaged the audience of 48 adolescent males and females, skillfully navigating the often-detached attitudes of this age group towards their personal development and inner work. I was delighted to see the group’s feedback – “challenging, fun, full of achievement” and “tiring, [but] improved friendships [and] camaraderie” which illustrate that this potentially cynical group engaged and benefited from the course, and they departed with strong recognition of what they had gained.
Sarah has been a valued member of the Curriculum for Life team at Christ College Brecon and has engaged our pupils on a number of well-being issues, not least, coping with the sensation of guilt and managing personal expectation.
Sarah’s natural style and calm delivery has ensured that the narrative flows and the interaction is spontaneous. She has brought out the best in our pupils, who have benefited from her expertise.
Vision Board Experiences
An Immersion to Focus on YOUR Authentic Life and YOUR Ideal Outcomes
Most of us have fleeting ideas of what we want to BE, DO or HAVE in our lives.
But they remain just that: fleeting.
After all, who has the time to intentionally get clear about what we want to create?
Without clarity of your aim or vision, how can you work towards a goal?
Do you know what you want, either in your personal life, or for your business?
My process invites you to find clarity on your hopes, dreams and desires. You will then have an opportunity to create a collage of images, words and phrases that represent those hopes, dreams and desires as well as steps you may need to take to help get you there. This Vision Board will be your visual representation which you can use to help keep your emotional connection high and your goals and aspirations at the forefront of your thoughts.
I attended Sarahs Vision Board workshop in January and already feel like I am benefiting from the power of focus and attention. Sarah creates the perfect space and setting to spend time gathering thoughts in a logical, meaningful way and then the fun part, of turning these visions into powerful statements and pictures that make up your vison board.
I’m so proud of mine and just looking at it makes me feel happy and positive and focused. It feels like a great achievement to have captured all of these thoughts and feelings and goals and hopes and dreams and visions on one beautiful A3 board! This wouldn’t ever have happened without Sarah’s own vision for the workshop and her great leadership. It’s a great experience. Give it a go!
Basic Navigation Courses
If you fancy learning a new skill, or want to dust off an old skill, book onto my basic navigation course which is aimed at those who have little or no experience using a map and compass.
In my 4-part course, of about 2 hours a week, for four weeks, each week is progressive, building on the week before, and consolidated with homework in between each session.
Group size is up to 6 people only, allowing for me to deal with individual queries and learning challenges.
As a qualified Mountain Leader, and lover of the outdoors, I know that learning to map read is the best way to gain more confidence in your own ability to explore our wonderful countryside safely.
If you would like to cover the material in couple of longer sessions or have a different group size, this can be discussed.
I booked onto the navigation course with limited map reading skills and zero knowledge on using a compass. My goal was to be able to take to the hills and find my way back using a map and compass. However, the course taught me so much more than I expected.
Instead of just being able to navigate my way home after getting lost, I am now comfortable in planning a route in advance, estimating the time it will take me by factoring in hills, terrain and obstacles and be able to recognise key features on a map. Sarah is a great teacher. She is patient and knowledgeable and always took the time to ensure we all understood before moving on. The course was well structured and enjoyable. Highly recommend if like me you want to be able to be able to safely and confidently enjoy the country side.
